Since FS 2014 - 15, GSI has launched and undertook a national programme on landslide susceptibility mapping - Macro scale (1:50,000) National Landslide Susceptibility Mapping (NLSM) with an aim to cover the 0.42 million sq. km landslide prone areas of the country. This national programme was formally launched by Shri Dinsha Patel, Hon’ble Minister of Mines, Government of India on 5 February, 2014 at the 53 Central Geological Programming Board Meeting, New Delhi.

Aims and Objectives

  • To create a dynamic National Landslide Susceptibility Geodatabase for India
  • To prepare GIS - based seamless Landslide Susceptibility Maps of India on 1:50,000 scale
  • To prepare a nation-wide repository on GIS-based Landslide Inventory

    NLSM Methodology

    Methodology of landslide susceptibility mapping proposed for NLSM can be divided into the following main themes - i) preparation of landslide inventory, ii) preparation of geofactor maps and of its related GIS - based database, iii) Spatial association analysis between various geofactors and landslides for determining ratings of factor classes and weights of the geofactor themes, iv) Knowledge - driven estimation of ratings of factor classes and weights of the geofactor themes through AHP, v) GIS - based modeling for integration of selected and weighted geofactor maps for preparation of landslide susceptibility scores, and vi) classification of landslide susceptibility score maps into qualitative maps showing varying degree of landslide susceptibility using success rate curve.
