Fluid inclusions (FI) are microscopic bubbles of liquid and gas that are trapped within minerals. Most FI contain dissolved gases, and in some environments the inclusions consist entirely of gases. As minerals often form from a liquid or in an aqueous medium, tiny blebs of that liquid can become trapped within the crystal structure or in healed fractures within a crystal. These small inclusions range in size from 0.1 to 1 mm and are usually only visible under microscope.

Capabilities:
  • Fluids play an important role in geological processes and FI are the only direct evidence of the fluids that have reacted with the rock.
  • Helps us to get an estimate of fluid trapping temperature, fluid density and thereby the pressure and temperature of formation
  • FI studies are increasingly being used for study of metamorphic rocks and have provided valuable insights into the nature of fluids and the critical role they play in stabilising key mineral assemblages (e.g. CO2 in granulite facies metamorphism).
  • In oil and gas exploration, FI data has found wide applications and has improved our understanding of petroleum migration histories.
