Indian Journal of Geosciences
Indian Minerals Vol.-1 No. 1 published in January 1947 was issued by the Mineral Information Bureau and the Geological Survey of India. Its second issue carries a message from Mr. C. H. Bhaba, Hon'ble Member in Council, Works, Mines & Power. From the status of an informative magazine on science and commerce of minerals (primarily ores), it has evolved with time into a full scale journal of earth sciences. This journal has received recognition and appreciation from the earth scientists across the globe. From 2009 and Vol.63, it has been rechristened to Indian Journal of Geosciences with a new look

Manual Series is the latest serial category publication of GSI for dissemination of information mainly on the analytical methodology and procedures of different analysis carried out in different laboratories of GSI. It is first introduced in 1983.

Palaentologia Indica
In 1861 Thomas Oldham introduced a new publication exclusively for the palaeontology. Published since 1861, as Monographs or Memoirs, these publications record the results of comprehensive palaeontological research. The earlier volumes in the group were published in a number of region-wise series while from 1899 a “New Series” has been started. The earlier volumes of New Series had varying number of Memoirs and parts but from Vol.36 (1962) onwards they are being issued mostly as single number volumes.

Special Publication
This was the initiation of a new series of publication in the GSI since 1980. Special publications include the proceedings in various symposia and seminars organized by GSI as well as a set of papers dedicated to a particular field of study in earth-science or on some special projects eg. No.2 titled “Geophysics in geological mapping and structural studies, petroleum resources exploration and mining geophysics”, No.3 titled “Archaean of Central India” and so on. These are published from Region headquarters and Central Headquarters.

Catalogue Series
In 1982, GSI introduced a new series of publications – The Catalogue Series – to the existing riches of publications of the department with the publication entitled “Catalogue of Meteorite Collection of Geological Survey of India in the Indian Museum”. Detailed information on 580 meteorites was included in this publication. Catalogue category of publications, an already well known in the world of scientific publications, encompasses the relevant aspects of scientific information, collected and collated in the Department, for proper dissemination through orderly documentation

First issue came as “GSI enters the 120th year of Service to the Nation”. It contained a brief history of first hundred years and growth during post Independence period with Five-Year Plans. Besides current activities and updating the new findings, special feature on some important economic mineral deposit described in each issue. The recent issues of News of the Central Headquarters and of the Regions come out in the form of e-News and are available in GSI OCBIS Portal: www.gsi.gov.in.

Miscellaneous Publication first published in 1950 includes Bibliography, Stratigraphic Lexicon. Misc. Pub 30 Series is a consolidated document on Geology and Mineral Resources of different States of India. The updated account of geology and mineral resources of different states of India are published both in English and regional languages. The popular Misc. The Memoirs of GSI, being published since 1856, contains detailed reports on complete surveys and investigations dealing either with a particular region or with a particular mineral in one or more regions. Memoirs of the Geological Survey of India, Volume I was first published in 1856 containing reports on different districts in one uniform series. It may be mentioned that the Memoirs are mostly classical. Memoirs of the Geological Survey of India, Volume III, Pt.1, published in 1863, describes in detail India’s most important coalfield, i.e. Raniganj Coalfield. H.F. Blanford recognized three groups, namely, Talchir, Damuda, and Panchet while discussing the rocks of Raniganj Coalfield in this Volume.

GSI introduced a new special series of publications – Bulletins – in 1950, under the directorship of W.D. West. These are published as compilation of work on economic geology, engineering geology and ground water considering on the importance building up of national economy and social development. The economic geology releases under Series A and engineering geology and ground water under Series B. Series C has been added to this Bulletin and it documents the basic data generated by various laboratories/ specialized divisions. The No.1 issue of Bulletin Series C came out in 1986.

Records of the Geological Survey of India started publishing since 1868. “Record Series” with Part 1: Annual General Report: Techno-administrative document published every year since 1868 mainly covering brief outline of activities of GSI for different regions and CHQ. Eventually, the last issue of AGR Vol.150 has been published in 2017 due to introduction of similar Record Series with Part 9: Annual Report since 2010 mainly covering its Mission-wise activities for each Field Season year. Records of GSI Part 2 to 8 are dedicated to Extended Abstracts of Unpublished reports of each FS Year. Part 2: Pertaining to CHQ including Central facilities of RSAS, National Energy resources, Polar studies Division, NCEGR etc.; Part 3: Pertaining to ER; Part 4: Pertaining to NER; Part 5: Pertaining to SR; Part 6: Pertaining to CR; Part 7: Pertaining to WR; Part 8: Pertaining to NR

First issued in 1947, Indian Minerals was the Journal which published collection of papers, short communications, and review articles, etc. on any discipline of Earth Sciences. It is now rechristened as Indian Journal of Geosciences.
