Mission II: Natural Resource Assessment
Set up in 1851 with the sole objective of locating coal for Railways, GSI has over the years expanded its role to undertake elucidation of the geological set up of the country, as well as continuing assessment and regional level exploration for coal and lignite resources. GSI recognizes the consequences associated with the increasing use of fossil fuels and thus has also focused its attention to renewable, non-conventional energy resources such as geothermal hot springs.
