Highlights of GSI activity in the Andamans

Expert team led by Director General, GSI visit Andaman

The Geological Survey of India has taken up the investigation of the earthquake on 26 December 2004, [06:28:51.1hrs. IST (IMD)]and resultant tsunami in the Andaman - Nicobar region and other parts of the country. In this connection a team of senior scientists of the Department, headed by Dr. K.N.Mathur, Director General reached Port Blair on 7th January 2005. The GSI team (Dr S.K. Ray, Dr S. Sengupta, S/Shri Prabhas Pande and Sujit Dasgupta) visited different parts of South Andaman and Baratang Islands to study the effects of the earthquake and tsunami. This team has submitted a report after initial surveys in the area.

This report contains the observations from the studies carried out between 7th and 12th January 2005. A detailed report with analysis on the effects of the earthquake and tsunami and other related issues will be brought out on completion of the work.
