The Salt Lake Campus at Karunamoyee,
GSI, Kolkata houses the Headquarters of the Eastern Region, the Marine Wing
and the Coal Wing. A Campus Area Network (CAN) network with 573 nodes has
been commissioned and made fully operational connecting all the computers
of the three Region/Wings as concluding part of the Phase-I of the GSI NET
Project.
On 11.07.2005, Dr.K.N.Mathur, Director General, GSI formally inaugurated
the central control room of the network by switching on the System for the
round-the-clock service. Sri Bijon Kumar Saha, Deputy Director general, Marine
Wing welcomed and addressed the invitees. He briefly touched upon the nature
and the
scope of the Project and thanked the concerned scientists for an excellent
job done. Dr.M.K.Mukhopadhyay, Deputy Director General, Eastern Region and
the Project
Coordinator spoke extensively on this occasion and presented an overview
of the Project with salient technical features thereof that now functions
as a highly
efficient network in a most diverse yet user-friendly environment. He laid
emphasis on the rare dedication, sincerity and efficiency of the CAN Core
Committee members
who had implemented the Project enthusiastically by untiring coordination
with the System Integrator. On behalf of the System Integrator, M/S HCL ComNet,
Sri Amit Chowdhury made presentation on the technical features and abilities
of the network. Dr. K.N.Mathur, Director General,
GSI, having switched on the System, spoke animatedly on this event and heartily
thanked
the Project Coordinator and the members of the Core Committee for successfully
implementing the Project in time. Sri S.Majumdar, Deputy Director General,
Coal Wing gave the valedictory thanks giving appreciating the extraordinary
efforts
of all the scientists concerned.
The installed network is data, audio and video ready. The audio and video
capabilities of the network were ably demonstrated by the operation of the
IP telephony when
Dr.Mathur and Sri Majumdar spoke to Dr.Mukhopadhyay and Sri Saha over the
IP telephone. They also had a video meeting among themselves. GSI proposes
to implement
the IP telephony and the video conferencing facility over this GSINET on
a national level shortly after the WAN connectivity in distributed stations
of GSI is established.
This NETWORK will act as an infrastructure for final implementation
of GSI Portal, trans-reception/exchange of scientific data and e-transactions.
