Salt Lake Campus Area Network Inaugurated

The Salt Lake Campus at Karunamoyee, GSI, Kolkata houses the Headquarters of the Eastern Region, the Marine Wing and the Coal Wing. A Campus Area Network (CAN) network with 573 nodes has been commissioned and made fully operational connecting all the computers of the three Region/Wings as concluding part of the Phase-I of the GSI NET Project.
On 11.07.2005, Dr.K.N.Mathur, Director General, GSI formally inaugurated the central control room of the network by switching on the System for the round-the-clock service. Sri Bijon Kumar Saha, Deputy Director general, Marine Wing welcomed and addressed the invitees. He briefly touched upon the nature and the scope of the Project and thanked the concerned scientists for an excellent job done. Dr.M.K.Mukhopadhyay, Deputy Director General, Eastern Region and the Project Coordinator spoke extensively on this occasion and presented an overview of the Project with salient technical features thereof that now functions as a highly efficient network in a most diverse yet user-friendly environment. He laid emphasis on the rare dedication, sincerity and efficiency of the CAN Core Committee members who had implemented the Project enthusiastically by untiring coordination with the System Integrator. On behalf of the System Integrator, M/S HCL ComNet, Sri Amit Chowdhury made presentation on the technical features and abilities of the network. Dr. K.N.Mathur, Director General, GSI, having switched on the System, spoke animatedly on this event and heartily thanked the Project Coordinator and the members of the Core Committee for successfully implementing the Project in time. Sri S.Majumdar, Deputy Director General, Coal Wing gave the valedictory thanks giving appreciating the extraordinary efforts of all the scientists concerned.
The installed network is data, audio and video ready. The audio and video capabilities of the network were ably demonstrated by the operation of the IP telephony when Dr.Mathur and Sri Majumdar spoke to Dr.Mukhopadhyay and Sri Saha over the IP telephone. They also had a video meeting among themselves. GSI proposes to implement the IP telephony and the video conferencing facility over this GSINET on a national level shortly after the WAN connectivity in distributed stations of GSI is established. This NETWORK will act as an infrastructure for final implementation of GSI Portal, trans-reception/exchange of scientific data and e-transactions.
