Sustainable development of natural resources for holistic socio-economic development of the country and active collaboration with the global geoscientific community for knowledge sharing are primary goals pursued by GSI. GSI realized the importance of knowledge economy, and the role of technology to implement knowledge management. Consequently GSI embarked upon a project to build its Organizational Information Infrastructure encompassing GSI Intranet and Enterprise Information Portal.

On 23rd November, 2006 the GSI Portal for Intranet users at GSI Central Headquarters, Kolkata was inaugurated by Hon’ble Dr. T. Subbarami Reddy, Minister of State, Ministry of Mines. The landmark occasion was also graced by the presence of the of Shri A. K. D. Jadhav, Secretary to the Govt. of India, Ministry of Mines and Shri P. M. Tejale, Director General, Geological Survey of India. Senior officers and other dignitaries were also present during the inauguration ceremony. The dignitaries also visited the Server Farm and Network Operations Centre of GSI.

GSI Enterprise Information Portal envisages to provide real time data to various stakeholders and users, including entrepreneurs, academicians and common public. The Portal will cater to two categories of users: the Intranet users (GSI employees) and the Internet users. The Intranet users will be able to access information related to their service related matters and various transactional applications like Payroll, Claims, Material Management, Field season projects, Enterprise GIS etc. The Internet users will be able to access information pertaining to activities, services and the geoscientific data and products of GSI.

The GSI Portal will go-live once the Wide Area Network in GSI is commissioned within the next six months. Simultaneously it will be available to the Internet community. The projected cost of this project has been estimated at around 25 crores spanning over 3 years of time.
