An incidence of meteoritic shower occurred at 6.30 pm on 27th September, 2003 spread over a vast area from Kaptipada, Mayurbhanj district to Jambu, Kendrapada district extending over nearly 120 km. The meteor had a northnorthwest-southsoutheast visible flight path with a luminous streak of white to bluish incandescence and ended up with a series of blasts and illumination equalling that of fullmoon. The celestial body appeared in the evening sky for nearly 50 seconds in the form of a bright star with a dazzling tail and split into innumerable pieces. An team of experts from GSI, Op: Orissa, Bhubaneswar investigated the impact sites Surusuria, Subarnapur, West Suniti and East Suniti and reported their findings. [PDF]
