MARINE SURVEYS
Marine Wing of GSI has more than 100
experienced geoscientists capable of taking up seabed survey. GSI has one ocean-going research vessel and two coastal launches, which are well equipped.
Has surveyed over 95% of the 2,012 million sq km EEZ, including about 1,05,000 sq km of
territorial waters of India, on reconnoitary scale.
Has located heavy mineral placer deposits which
are exploitable with available technology.
Has located zones of lime mud, phosphate rich sediments, calcareous sediments, indications of hydrocabons, metaliferous micronodules.
-
Has a
experience of applied studies/survey related to coastal geotectonics, current
observation, placer location, port development. and expertise to meet the specific demand
oriented needs of the sponsor.
R&D activities in various fields of oceanography, including IGCP.
The
Marine Data Centre is a well equipped computer set up of DOD housed in Marine Wing,
Calcutta which is a central data bank on ocean related geological parameters, collected in course of 400 missions, with need
based retrieval system for on line/off line data exchange.
Services
available
Sea bed geological mapping with subsurface
data up to 30 m depth along with preparation of geological, geophysical, geochemical and other thematic maps.
Investigation for placer minerals in the continental shelf.
Survey for off-shore structure like single Buoy Mooring System (SBM), drilling platforms and jetties.
Survey for development of ports and harbours. Survey for laying under water pipe lines
and cables.
