• GSI played an active role in geotechnical studies related to all major river valley and construction projects in India since pre-independence days.

• It has a stream of geoscientists specially trained in the study of rock properties and the impact of both short term and long term stress on it.

• Carries out studies on seismotectonics, neotectonics and earthquake impact.

Services available

• Laboratories can generate data on physical properties of rock, soil, coarse and fine aggregates, etc. on commercial basis. The labs have recently inducted Laser Particle Size Analyser(Malvern make) capable of analysing particle sizes ranging between 0.3 to 300 micro metre and Servo controlled Compression Testing machine to determine the rock mechanics properties (Hydraulic & Engineering Instruments Co, No. HLA- 592.310).

• Foundation studies - River valley projects, dams, barrages and power projects (pre project stage, construction stage and post project services)

• Studies for alignment of road, railway, irrigation canals and tunnels (both pre project and construction stage services)

• Seismicity, micro earthqauke and lanslide hazard studies

• Studies on specialised problems like flood controls, and river bank erosion
