CURATORIAL DIVISION

The Division, located in Calcutta, is the repository of :

  • Type fossils and other registered fossil collection of GSI
  • Meteorites
  • Registered rocks and minerals

These can be studied by scientists from India and abroad for academic purposes

The Division also maintains the following Galleries in the Indian Museum, Calcutta :

  • Siwalik Gallery with about 6000 fossils.
  • Earth and meteorite Gallery with about 700 meteorites.
  • Rocks and mineral Gallery with over 67,000 rock and 21,000 mineral specimens
  • Invertebrate fossil Gallery with about 28,000 plant, invertebrate and microfossils.

  • The Division offers assistance to visiting scientists for study of registered fossils .
  • Organises exhibitions, highlighting nation's progress in earth science studies, at national and international levels.
