| BARREN ISLAND VOLCANISM DURING 12-13TH JANUARY, 2006 | ||
| To monitor the ongoing volcanism of Barren Island Volcano a team of
Geological Survey of India comprising Dr. M.M. Mukherjee, Dy. Director
General, Op: WB-SK-AN, Dr. P.C. Bandopadhyay, Geologist(Sr), Op: WB-SK-AN,
Dr. Tapan Pal, Geologist(Sr), Sri N.R. Mohapatra, Geologist(Sr), Op:
WB-SK-AN and Sri Prasun Ghosh, Geologist(Jr), Op: WB-SK-AN approached
Barren Island by Indian Coast Guard Ship, C.S. GANGA DEVI during 12-13th
January, 2006. The party could reach very close to the Barren Island
(up to 0.8 km) and studied the nature of eruption from shipboard during
daytime and after sunset. The eruption resembled fire works of different
colours over the crater and on the slope of the volcanic cone. Dense
cluster of incandescent tephra particles of various sizes were ejecting
out from the crater mouth forcefully with ballistic trajectories. Apart
from eruption form the main crater, glow of fire from the northern flank
of the volcanic cone and thin layers of red hot materials on western
slope were observed. The volcanic activity compared to its early stage
of eruption during May-June, 2005 had subsided to a grey smoke and minor
amount of ash were emitting out from the same crater, producing very
thin (about 20m to 30 m high) eruption column. Lava flow sensustricto
was not noticed. |
