SURVEYS - ON SHORE, OFF SHORE AND AERIAL
98.13% of the total mappable area of the country covered by systematic geological mapping on 1:50,000 scale.
About 33,900 sq. km area covered on 1:25,000 scale under specialised thematic mapping.
95.75% coverage of EEZ of India by marine sea bed surveys.
90,900 l. km. of multi-sensor airborne surveys.
Geological studies of 17,000 sq km in Antarctica.
MINERAL FINDS
Additional Mineral Resources established during the last 5 years:
9290 million tonnes of coal reserves in different fields of the country
- 1.64 trillion (cumulative) cu. ft. of Coal Bed Methane was estimated in Birbhum and eastern part of north Karanpura coal fields.
- About 25.76 million tonnes of lead-zinc ore.
- About 23.344 million tonnes of gold ore (estimated).
- Discovery of new kimberlite pipes in Central and southern India.
- About 3.242 million tonnes of Manganese ore in Orissa and Central India.
- About 0.484 million tonnes of molybdenum ore with average grade of 0.117 % Mo in Marudipatti central block, Tamilnadu.
- About 6282 million tonnes of limestone reserves, mainly in the Litang valley of Meghalaya.
- 14.2 million tonnes of Platinum Group of Metals estimated : 7.7 million tonnes with grade of 1.55 gm Pd + Pt per tonne at Baula-Nuasahi, Orissa.
- High incidences of Cesium (0.521.0%) and Lithium (0.9%) in Purulia district W.B.
- 18,700 million cubic meters of Dimension Stone resource by regional exploration in 17 States.
- Special programme of Development of Village Economy through Mineral/Resource Appraisal (DOVEMAP) in the North Eastern Region for promoting tiny sector industries.

 P C Mandal Director General, GSI
Shri Prayag Chandra Mandal took over charge as the Director General, GSI on April 2, 2002. Born in 1944, Shri Mandal, an M.Sc. degree holder in Chemistry, has had a brilliant academic career. He joined the Survey in 1972 and has served in different parts of the country in various official capacities till he was brought to the Central Headquarters, Calcutta in 1996. The same year he was promoted as Deputy Director General(Geochemistry). In 2001, Shri Mandal became the Sr. Deputy Director General. Shri Mandal represented GSI in several international forums. Apart from his scientific achievements, he is an ardent social activist and was elected to the Legislative Assembly in West Bengal in 1969. |
