150 YEARS OF THE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA

GSI office at Kolkata   Geological Survey of India (GSI) which was set-up on 4th March, 1851, plans to celebrate the sesquicentennial year of its productive existence through a year long programme beginning with an International Seminar at its Central Headquarters in Calcutta on 4th March, 2001.

The occasion is envisaged to coincide with the setting-up of a Heritage Museum to project the progress of Geoscientific activities in India from the beginning of 19th Century till the end of 20th Century.

A Postage stamp has been issued by the Department of Post, Government of India.

During the year, GSI proposes to organise the following International and National Seminars in 2001-2002.

GSI will also publish a volume containing Benchmark Papers on Indian Geology. Suggestions are invited from geoscientists for selection of such Benchmark Papers.
